Wellington Voxel
Wellington Voxel is a different perspective on one of the most famous Wellington landmarks.
Wellington Voxels is an exercise of 3D design that aims to adapt a famous Wellington landmark to a completely different artistic style.
This project was about evaluating how accurately I could translate a real life scene into a 3D model, using a moodboard as a guideline for the scene style and photo scouting as a reference for all the composition details.
Wellington (capital city of New Zealand) is a place that has compacted all the massification of a capital city into a small area. For this reason, I think that an interesting way to represent a Wellington landmark would be through voxel art, which is a very close-packed and minimalistic 3D design style.
I headed down to the Clyde Quay Boat Harbour myself to take pictures of the most recognisable details. From the colourful docks to the distribution of the sailing boats. Then, I created a moodboard to collect inspiration about previous voxel art models and headed straight up to sculpting.
The only restriction for this project is that I wasn't allowed to use colours or textures, only glowing materials. The final result shows the model of Clyde Quay Boat Harbour on a night scene, using glowing materials as the main illumination.
