Dining Out

Dining out is an Audio Design project about audio recording techniques and storytelling.

Dining out is an introduction to Audio Design. The overall objectives of this project were to learn how to record, sample and edit sounds using audio recording equipment and audio processing software.

The task was to capture audios from any source using a Tascam DR-05X microphone to learn how to record audio files in real-time. After that, we needed to create an audio composition in Adobe Audition using all the collected sounds. The only requirement for the final prototype was that the composition itself had to be "meaningful", either by evoking a certain mood or communicating a specific message.

I decided to explore the capacities of audio as a tool for storytelling. Since we are used to consume stories in either a visual or audiovisual form, I thought it would be interesting to create a story using only audio.

I collected more than 50 audio samples from a fine dining place I used to work at called Egmont St. Eatery. I captured live sounds from the chefs at different stages of the cooking process, some sounds from the bartenders and some others that I did myself at the place.

Following the theme of my audio samples, I thought it would be coherent to create a story around a restaurant. Therefore, I created a narrative around someone's first time going out for dinner. However, some details about the story are subjected to the listener's interpretation.

As complementary resources for the final presentation, I added an artist statement giving a brief description of the story. I also took a picture of the restaurant's logo as a cover image for the project. Finally, I made a music visualiser using Blender 3D particles and After Effects to make the visualiser fully reactive to the audio.
